In the history of Chinese medicine Du Zhong has been prepared in various ways to bring out certain of its properties. The De Pei Ben Cao sums up the most commonly used preparations of its time (the 18th century) as follows: Su (酥-goat butter) treat to address dysentery, treat with wine to dispel cold, honey-fry to moisten the liver, salt-fry to strengthen the lower back and kidneys and fry with ginger juice to treat pain. Nowadays, the only treatment commonly used is that of salt-frying and most modern sources cite that treatment as increasing the herb’s function of strengthening the lower back and kidney.
