The Fu Ling mushroom grows naturally around the roots of pine trees. The part of the fruiting body nearest the root is called Fu Shen (implying the spirit-shen of the Fu Ling). This portion of the herb gets its spirit-quieting function from the pine root. Thus, true Fu Shen should include pieces of the root. The outer skin of the Fruiting body is called Fu Ling Pi and the remainder of the fruiting body is called Fu Ling. In general Fu Shen is desired when wanting to emphasize the spirit-quieting aspect of Fu Ling and the peel (Fu Ling Pi) is more purely diuretic (lacking the supplementing aspect of the fruiting body). Chi Fu Ling's function is considered to be a combination of that of the peel and the fruiting body; so it is more diuretic than Fu Ling (but not as good at supplementing) and less diuretic than Fu Ling Pi (but better at supplementing).
