Chai Hu - a dosage discussion:
Through the ages, the appropriate dosage of Chai Hu has been debated. The conclusion of modern practitioners and scholars is far from unanimous, but the general consensus is as follows:
Usual dose (10-15g) is appropriate for coursing the liver or draining depressed stagnation (with Zhi Shi, Bai Shao, Dang Gui, etc.)
A large dose is often used to abate fevers when owing to depressed heat in the Shao Yang half interior and half exterior patterns. Often paired with Huang Qin for this application. 20-30g or larger up to 120 grams (children’s dose up to 1g per KG of body weight). Small doses will not be effective for this. Note that Zhang Zhong Jing used large doses in Xiao Chai Hu Tang and Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang.
Small doses of Chai Hu are used to uplift the yang qi. An example is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang where the dose is less than one gram.
Lastly, modern research indicates that for digestive issues (harmonizing earth and wood) and for eliciting the nerve-quieting function of Chai Hu in addressing insomnia, dizziness, and headaches, doses of 20 to 30 grams are needed.
