This item is prepared by placing untreated Bai Zhu in a hot wok filled with smoking wheat- bran. The herb is stir-fried until it turns a light brown colour. This treatment reduces the drying nature of Bai Zhu and increases its ability to fortify the spleen. Thus, the herb is used to treat disharmonies in the central burner that inhibit the spleen’s ability to transport. It also treats sweating owing to exterior vacuity and qi fall (as in Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang). For treatment of water swelling, phlegm-rheum disorders and wind-damp bi patterns use the untreated herb. When treating vacuity diarrhea use earth-fried Atractylodes (Tu Chao Bai Zhu).
