Most Sheng Di Huang that is sold on the market is actually Gan Di Huang ( The Gan here means heat-dried). Gan Di Huang is made from the fresh herb by heat-drying it and then slicing is and heat drying it again. This heat-drying process causes the herb to turn dark brown or black. Our fresh cut Sheng Di Huang is slightly different. This herb is slices while still fresh. ( The fresh root is an off-white colour similar to a parsnip root.) Then, the sliced herb is carefully dried at a very low temperature over several days so that it does not turn black. The aim of this careful processing is to make the dried herb as similar as possible to the fresh herb. This is thought to be the best way to emphasize the blood-cooling properties of Sheng Di Huang. For blood-heat skin disorders, feverish disorders of the blood aspect and for blood heat bleeding disorders this extra strong blood cooling function should be ideal.
