While Bai Zhu is known for its ability to supplement the spleen, fortify the stomach, dry damp and transform phlegm it is not often thought of for helping with constipation. 魏龙骧 (Wei Long-Xiang) writes that he has had great success using large doses of Bai Zhu for this purpose. In light cases he uses 30-60 grams and in severe cases up to 150 grams per day. Of course, one must treat according to the pattern presenting. Bai Zhu can support the spleen yang’s functions of transporting and transforming but root causes such as yin, blood or yang vacuity must also be addressed. For example, for dry-stool constipation Sheng Di Huang (Untreated Rehmannia) can be included and for blood vacuity, one can include Dang Gui. Often a small dose of Sheng Ma is included in these formulas to promote upward transport of the clear and thus encourage downward flow of turbid material. This application of Bai Zhu is not appropriate for cases of binding depression of liver qi.
